The Hatboro-Horsham School District Adds to their Accolades

If you’re interested in buying a new home in Montgomery County, consider that Horsham Glen, a Hallmark Homes Group community is located within the award-winning Hatboro-Horsham School District. It was recently announced that Hallowell Elementary School within this district has been recognized for outstanding initiatives involving community collaboration, sustainable practices and innovative designs.

Community Collaboration

Hallowell Elementary was built on a property that was repurposed and transformed into a state-of-the-art learning facility. Support from Horsham Township and the Horsham Land Development Authority enabled school officials to acquire the plot for modest sum of just one dollar through a Public Benefit Conveyance.

Members of the community were encouraged by the township to offer their input throughout the design process, making this a true collaboration. The Horsham community was then able to generate a functional new educational institution that would serve the local town residents for years to come.

Living in this new home community in Montgomery County, you become part of an active and engaged community that collaboratively has the quality of education in mind.

Sustainable Practices

The Green School of the Year Award was given to Hallowell Elementary for its impressive array of sustainable features. The facility boasts a ground-source geothermal HVAC system, low-flow plumbing facilities, daylight/occupancy light fixtures, automated building control systems and a modern thermal building envelope.

The exterior aspects of the property feature multiple rows of new and mature street trees, water-efficient landscaping, an array of drought-tolerant plants and infiltration basins creatively blended into open space areas. An educational mindset is maintained throughout the campus through signage that explains the various sustainable features, giving students more insight about the environmental benefits.

Innovative Designs

The new facility was built to accommodate 750 students – double its previous capacity. A creative approach takes advantage of frontage on multiple roadways to direct drop-off traffic into three distinct locations – bus transportation traffic to one side, parent drop-off in the front and pre-school drop-off in the rear.

The front-facing one-story wing allows efficient access to common areas such as the gymnasium, cafeteria, media center as well as the administration offices. A unique skybridge connects this wing to the two-story classroom building which offers gorgeous views of the paved courtyard and the student gardens.
